I spoke with the team at Bella Sante when we started to gear up this project so we could all get to know each other better. They sent me three questions to answer that will help all of you get to know me better, too. I'm hoping that my experiences and journey resonate with you ... I think most of us can identify with awkward teen years, thoughts about aging and why we choose to take care of our skin into our mid-lives and beyond. This is the second question I was asked to answer. The written version appears below the video.
Question 2: What are your views on aging before starting this project? Are you ready for old age?
The short answer is yes and I’ll tell you why. But first, I want to tell you about my house.
I love it, we’ve lived here for 24 years now. It’s a nice little bungalow in one of Saskatoon’s oldest neighbourhoods. It was built in 1958, so that makes it 66 years old. When it rains, the joists creak. In the winter if there’s a cold snap, my slippers freeze to the baseboards in one spot where the insulation has settled too far to keep the wall warm. There’s a crack in one ceiling after we replaced a telepost. There are little stains and scratches in the hardwood, and places where the finish has rubbed away from little feet and little paws. It’s an old house.
Last year, we put in all new energy efficient windows and a new furnace. We gave the outside a fresh coat of paint. A couple of years before that, we replaced the front door and the shingles. This spring we planted flowers. Lots of people love the patina and history of an old house and don’t want to change a thing. But I want to fix things up a little. Freshen the paint. Repair some of those cracks. I want this old house to look its best, no matter how old it gets.
My body is also my home. I want to take care of it. I’m exercising and eating well to help with the creaks, and I’m taking care of my skin to keep the lines and signs of age away as much as I can for as long as I can. I don’t FEEL old. So I’m going to make the most out of this amazing gift from Bella Sante.
I believe “old” means whatever you want it to be. Fight your wrinkles or leave them be. Color your hair or celebrate your grey. You should get to choose how you age.
Mostly, I hope everyone gets the chance to BE old. Because that’s a real gift right there.
Until next time,
~Michelle
